Moving from one home to another can be one of the most stressful experiences anyone can undertake, especially for families making a long-distance move. Tobin Bros. Moving & Storage has been a specialiTobin Bros. Moving & StorageNeigborhood: West Dayton

United States of Americast in the moving and storage business for almost a century.

Located at 4157 Gardendale Avenue in Dayton, the company originally opened in 1916 as James J. Tobin Movers and specializes in full-service packing, moving and storage. David C. Rado purchased Tobin Bros. Moving & Storage from the third generation owner of the business, Jim Tobin, in November of 2007.

Rado came from the landscaping industry and saw a great opportunity to go out on his own. "Through my years in landscaping, I met realtors, commercial property managers, and other similar professionals," Rado said. "They all dealt with moving and storage companies so the relationships I built in that occupation translated well to this business."

"When I was looking for an opportunity, Tobin had everything I wanted," Rado remembered. "I spent 18 years in landscaping and fortunately, the people who work here had the business knowledge I needed for the company to be even more successful." It helped, of course, that the company already had a positive and well-known reputation.

Of course, being affiliated with a large, national moving company has helped as well. "We have had a very successful, 61-year relationship with our national carrier, Wheaton Van Lines," noted Rado. "I believe we are the second-oldest Wheaton Van Lines agent in the country."

"We have certified moving consultants who go through specialized training through Wheaton Van Lines' agent certification program," said Rado. "The combination of training and experience gives us the ability to better serve our customers."

A moving consultant is someone who knows the entire process and is a recognized professional in a regulated industry. The consultant is familiar with the process by which a moving project is priced and the government regulations associated with moving. Tobin Bros. is also part of the American Moving and Storage Association.

Rado explained that the process is relatively easy, provided the client is reasonably well organized. "When the client calls we go out to the home and do a survey taking inventory of the client's items and set an estimate," said Rado. "You just pick the day you would like to move and weTobin Bros. Rado and his crew understand that it moving is a personal experience. "Personal possessions are important to people," he said, "and there is an emotional tie to the whole thing." "We try to make the clients feel more comfortable with the process and our work so that they can relax a bit during such a stressful time."

"Often, people don't realize what a tremendous undertaking it can be to move until they are into it," Tobin offered. "Clients can let us worry about the physical move and help reduce the stress of the process."

Tobin Bros. Moving & Storage is also expanding its market. "We are a moving and storage company," said Rado, "but now we also provide transportation and warehousing service to commercial builders."

Tobin Bros. receives and stores the interior furnishings for restaurant, hotel, or other commercial properties, giving the builder a location to assemble and store the equipment until the building is ready.

Besides a constant effort for excellence in the industry, Tobin Bros. is heavily involved with the Holiday Aid Annual School's Food Drive program through the Dayton Foodbank. "The Tobin family started working with Holiday Aid years ago and we will continue to deliver the food donations to the food bank," said Rado.

Rado is thankful for his staff and the experience they bring to the business. "I really like the people I work with," he said, "they are the best in the business and they are the reason that our company has the reputation that it has." Rado's faith in his colleagues is not unfounded. Out of 8 full-time employees, at least two of them have been with the company for nearly 30 years.
